Entrails: Tales from the morgue

16/09/10  ||  Khlysty

Okay, it’s Sunday morning, already too hot to function properly and I’ve been awaken pretty early by the heat and some stupid church bells (oh, the horror! THE HORROR!!!), so I’m already pissed off enough, so I’m gonna keep this short ‘n’ sweet. Entrails is one more ‘90s death metal act that, while in its early incarnation, produced a coupla demos (anyone of you Swedes in GD ever heard ‘em?) and then split, only to be resurrected almost 15 years later and grace us with its first “proper” album, the evocatively titled “Tales From The Morgue”.

Now, from what I hear, these guys go for what I could call a slight update/refurbishing of the classic Swedeath sound. If you know what I’m talking ‘bout, you already know what to expect: a meaty, crunchy guitar tone, a sense of groove, even when the songs go into warp-speed territory (something which doesn’t happen all this often, but, anyway…), nice changes in speed and rhythm, super-brutal gurgly vocals, lyrics that aren’t afraid to push things a little bit (e.g., “Entrails… a tasty entrail/Flesh and blood/Dinner for two/Show me some death”, I know, not much, but okay), the whole works (and what the fuck does the band’s logo remind me of?…).

The update of the classic sound I talked about earlier comes mainly through the production, which is obviously more clear and “treated” than earlier works of said subgenre. This is a good thing and a bad thing for the record. On the one hand, the modernized production job adds up on the brutality factor. On the other, though, it subtracts a bit of character from the band, since it makes it sound pretty in line with a gajillion other death metal acts that draw inspiration from the early forays of the boys of the Ikea-land to death metal. This is especially obvious with the drum sound, which comes off as pretty treated and lacks “organicosity” (another great new word by Khlysty, for you to use! Yayyyyyyy!!!).

Anyway, there’s not much more to say about Entrails and their first record. There’s a funny record intro and some samples and keys here and there and, generally speaking, this is a competent and enjoyable, if not exactly spectacular record. I think that some songs would’ve benefited from a bit of tighter editing, but that not a dealbreaker. Bottom line is that, if one likes the classic Swedish Death Metal sound, one would probably enjoy “Tales From The Morgue”. It’s not something that will turn the world on its head, but a good album, nonetheless.
